Split one Markdown file into separate files at each heading

A single Markdown file can grow into something unwieldy: a long guide with a dozen sections, or notes that started small and turned into a reference document nobody wants to scroll through anymore. This tool breaks one file into several smaller ones, cutting at each heading so every piece stands on its own.

You upload the .md file and choose the option labeled Split at heading level, with a choice of 1, 2, or 3; the default of 2 breaks the file wherever a second-level heading appears, which usually lines up with the main sections of a document. Each resulting piece keeps its own heading and the text under it, and you get them all at once in a single zip file rather than one long file to sort through by hand.

Only one file can be split at a time, so if you have several long documents you will run this once per file. Processing happens on the site's servers over a secure connection, and everything you upload is removed within sixty minutes. If your document has headings nested more deeply than the level you choose, those subsections stay attached to the piece they belong under.

Once you have the smaller files, Merge Markdown can put a different subset back together. Splitting is free on a daily allowance, and works from a browser on any device.
